I don’t use the car every day and have only managed to do 15,000 miles since buying it. It was never intended as my daily driver, it’s just for sunny days and weekends away. Each time I take the cover off and turn the key, it starts first time. The noise of the flat 6 is fantastic. I hardly ever turn the radio on, as I drive with the window open so I can listen to the engine.
It takes a few miles to warm up the engine and until it’s hot, it’s never revved over 3000 rpm. Once hot, the performance is brilliant, the air cooled engine sounds better the higher it revs, the suspension holds the car flat through the bends and the brakes stop the car well. If I was to have one small criticism, the brakes are not up to modern standards, but you get used to them.
The G50 gear box is very good, the gear changes being very precise, but I do take care when changing, especially until the box warms up.
The sports seats are very supportive, the position of the steering wheel is good and the pedals are well positioned for me. Some people complain about the pedal offset on RHD classic 911s, but I haven’t found it a problem. The main dial on the dash is the rev counter, the speedo to the right is slightly obscured by the steering wheel.
Miles per gallon isn’t something I worry about. I’ve achieved 30mpg on a run, but a few less is the norm. I always use super unleaded petrol and being as Ethanol is now being added, I put a splash of conditioner in the tank with every fill. The UK is only adding 5% Ethanol at the moment, which doesn’t do any harm, but other parts of Europe are adding 10% (E10), which won’t do the fuel system any good on these old cars.
